Whispers on the Coast Wind pulls at the tall grasses. The Atlantic sighs against the sand. They came with hope and vanished without a trace. Roanoke is not only a place, it is a question, a haunting, a mirror. What did it mean to try and begin something new here and fail before it ever had the chance?

The first attempt. In 1585 Sir Walter Raleigh sent the first English colony to Roanoke Island, a military outpost poorly provisioned at odds with the local Algonquian tribes. They were gone within a year, defeated not by violence, but by hunger, weather, and misjudgment. The Second Colony. 1587, a new group, this time civilians. 115 men, women, and children.
